I NEED HELP!! PC vs. MAC . round one .

So I'm thinking of getting a laptop. I've been wanting one/needing one for a long time, but I find the want desire growing more so as of late. Not sure if the need is actually growing too much. I'll be doing a bit of traveling soon and I like the idea of being able to work on the road. The dilemma lies in do I finally get another mac (after about a decade of not using one) and get the new macbook pro that makes me drool, or do I stick to a pc? I'm assuming the pc would cost me a lot less than the $3k I would have to shell out for the apple, but I just don't know. Ugh!!

LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!!

I have a friend who has a brand new mac powerbook that he's going to be getting rid of for peanuts. I'll find out how much he wants for it, if you want.

Any windows laptop you got for $3k would be the mad god's britches. Keep in mind though, that unless you special order, what you get will have Vista, and your software layout needs to adhere to Vista compatibility to work out well. Also, if you want to hit above 3GB of RAM, you have to go with the 64 bit version.

On the other hand, the macbook would 'just work' as advertised. I have no idea about their current, if any, RAM limitations.

Boobies.

A recent article that may help (or not): Mac vs. PC cost analysis: How does it all add up?

In many ways, the old notion that Macs are more expensive than PCs is just that: old. The price gaps for comparible parts and quality isn't as large as you might think and, in some areas, Macs come out cheaper. One factor many leave out is the cost/value of the software that comes with the machine. I'm not talking about just the OS. Macs tend to come with a lot of rather nice software on it such as iTunes, iChat, iDVD, iPhoto (well, all the iApps), etc. You also have to take into account the cost of using the machine. That is, the time spent on maintainance, security, and every day use. As sunder said, the macbook would 'just work'. It is potentially more secure too (although I will say that I used a Windows machine for years and never had virus. I think a lot of security really comes down to common sense and cautioned judgement, regardless of OS). Then again, you did say you haven't used a Mac in a few years. So, the cost of relearning some things (keyboard shortcuts, for instance) and possibly being frustrated with others because you've been used to using Windows comes into play (this is no insignificant cost).

I will note that I haven't looked at PC prices in a while so take everything with a grain of salt. The only limitations I know of for RAM on a macbook is how much you can cram into the thing which is, I believe, 4 gig.

heheh, I posted this dilemma a month, or so, ago. I love this debate.
I too am looking at getting a Macbook Pro, but I was looking at refurbished.

With a cardboard box, some crayons and a little imagination, you could have yourself a frickin' sweet laptop that is:

  • Thousands of dollars less than the competitors.
  • Several pounds lighter than all other laptops currently available.
  • Has infinite battery life.
  • Utilizes Solid State Corrugated Technology® so it runs silently and never overheats.
  • And with the power of Imagination™, there's no limit to the specs! Need more RAM? Cereal boxtops! A faster CPU? You're only limited by the number of 0's you can fit onto a single POG! This puppy can even double as a time machine. A fucking time machine. Let's see those Brand X laptops pull that shit off. Yeah, that's what I thought, Dell. More like DULL.

Why settle for anything less, Aye? Get your Dominospiron 6100 today!

If this was meant for me, thanks! It's a pretty sexy mind and hard to resist. (;

Although, I'm pretty sure that was not meant for me since I'm not the creative genius behind the Dominospiron 6100.
